Beijing, July 12 /Xinhua/ — According to data published by the State Information Center under the National Development and Reform Commission of China, in the first half of this year, China’s economy showed progress while maintaining stability, with consumption continuing to recover and high-tech industries continuing to gain momentum.

Consumer activity continued to recover during the first six months, and the index tracking the volume of payments in offline consumption increased by 2.7 percent year-on-year, while the number of visitors to traditional shopping areas rose by 5.7 percent, according to data from the State Information Center.

Data showed that during the reporting period, household spending on electronic goods increased by 9.5 percent year-on-year, while spending on transport and the catering sector associated with cultural and tourist activities increased by 6.1 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.

Xin Yuquan, a junior researcher at the State Information Center, explained this recovery by the introduction of a package of measures to stimulate domestic demand and consumption, as well as the improvement of demand and supply conditions, which, in his opinion, contributed to active growth in the areas of culture, tourism, and “smart” consumption.

The data also highlighted the growing momentum in high-tech sectors. Investments in advanced areas such as artificial intelligence and humanoid robots increased by 118.4% year-on-year in the first half of the year, while the value of won tenders for digital infrastructure projects, including computing power, rose by 23.0%.

Industrial activity and innovation also remained resilient. The manufacturing activity index in industrial parks increased by 3.9 percent year-on-year during the reporting period, while the number of patents issued related to emerging industries of strategic importance rose by 15.6 percent compared to the same period last year. -0-
