In recent years, the Kanbashi district of Ordos city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has been demonstrating rapid development in the field of cultural tourism. The region’s success is built upon three key components: the sporting excitement of the auto racing town, the cultural heritage of the Kanchzhen theme park, and the impressive lighting shows on Ulan Mulun Lake, which together create a unique tourist image of the northern steppes of China.
The auto racing town, operating since 2010, has already hosted 79 national and regional level competitions, attracting over 600,000 spectators and tourists. A full range of services has been established based on it: from race viewing to leisure and accommodation.
At the Kanchzhen Cultural Theme Park, folklore performances and events in the traditional Chinese style are held regularly. Immersive tours and family programs are gaining increasing popularity, and the infrastructure for unique cuisine and souvenir crafts is actively developing.
The evening program on the shore of Lake Ulanmulun deserves special attention. Fireworks, synchronized drone flights, and a laser musical fountain make up a show that locals call “the three symbols of Ordos.” In 2025, there were 12 such performances, which boosted nighttime consumption by over 120 million yuan.
During the May Day holidays in 2026, the Kanbashi district hosted 388,000 tourists, and the total income from tourism reached 148 million yuan. These figures clearly confirm that Kanbashi’s cultural tourism is steadily gaining momentum, attracting guests from all over China and becoming a new calling card of Inner Mongolia.
