Fuzhou, July 9 /Xinhua/ — 28 people died as a result of a fire that occurred on Thursday at a shoe factory in Jinjiang County, Quanzhou City Prefecture /Fujian Province, East China/. This was reported by local authorities.

According to the fire and rescue department of Quanzhou city, the fire broke out at 12:04 at the factory of Huiteng Shoes Co., Ltd. in Jiangtou village, Chendai town. Over 500 firefighters were involved in the rescue operation.

At the moment of the fire outbreak, there were 237 workers and two external employees from the delivery service present at the enterprise.

A total of 213 people were evacuated, but two of them later died in the hospital despite doctors’ efforts. In addition, the death of 26 people who were considered missing was confirmed.

The police detained the company owner and several other responsible individuals suspected of involvement in the tragedy. Corporate accounts of the organization were also frozen.

The authorities of Fujian province have formed a leading working group for emergency response and five subordinate working groups responsible for rescue operations at the scene, investigation of the cause, and mitigation of the consequences.
