Damascus, July 8 /Xinhua/ — Syria and France on Tuesday, during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, established several joint economic committees and signed a number of memoranda of understanding and investment agreements covering key sectors. This was reported by the state news agency SANA.
The agreements were announced during a business forum held at the People’s Palace. E. Macron and the interim leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, participated in the event. Government officials and business leaders from both countries discussed prospects for expanding economic cooperation and supporting Syria’s reconstruction.
A. al-Sharaa invited French companies to participate in the reconstruction of Syria, stating that the country aims to establish strategic partnerships in sectors such as ports, aviation, energy, water supply, healthcare, digital infrastructure, and manufacturing.
In turn, E. Macron said that the current stage opens up the opportunity to strengthen stability and accelerate recovery efforts in Syria, as well as promote more active participation of French companies and investors.
He announced the creation of joint economic committees to coordinate reconstruction efforts in partnership with the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf.
E. Macron stated that France is ready to cooperate with Syria in restoring its banking sector and supports coordination with international financial institutions to assist in the economic recovery.
Earlier that same day, A. ash-Sharaa held talks with E. Macron. They discussed bilateral relations and the situation in the region and the world. The President of France arrived in Syria for the first time since 2009. –0–
