The color of Neva water on a foggy day, muted brick, “coffee with milk” and 37 other colors of Petersburg became the topic of a practical seminar for students of the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The seminar was organized by the Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of Saint Petersburg at the university’s request.
Future architects were told that the officially approved color palette of the city on the Neva appeared in 1966 during a large-scale restoration of the historic center. All 40 colors were chosen deliberately: they are based on archival sources and descriptions.
The students not only got acquainted with the coloristics of the Northern capital but also learned how to apply it in practice.
“We believe this is beneficial for the future architects of our city. Petersburg is a unique city with such a color system. We combined several events into one – both an educational component and the preparation of personnel for our city,” said the Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture. Elena Kramskova.
After the seminar, students were invited to independently choose a color for one of the houses in Krylov Lane, which is currently being restored.
