London, July 7 /Xinhua/ — A liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker sent several distress signals on Tuesday morning when it was attacked in the Gulf of Oman. This is evidenced by records from the maritime VHF radio channel in the Strait of Hormuz area, exclusively obtained by Xinhua.
Recordings provided to the agency by a crew member of a merchant vessel near the gas carrier captured radio transmissions from the attacked tanker, stating that a drone hit it on the port side.
The ship reported that a fire broke out in the engine room causing heavy smoke, but the crew has not yet been able to fully assess the extent of the damage. The gas carrier requested assistance from nearby coastal radio stations and naval forces.
The crew also stated that all personnel on board are safe and have gathered at the starboard side.
On the radio, the vessel identified itself as the LNG tanker Al Rekayyat. –0–
