Beijing, July 3 /Xinhua/ — The National Meteorological Center /NMC/ of China on Friday issued a “yellow” alert level due to Typhoon “Maishak,” which is expected to bring strong gusts of wind and heavy rains to the southern regions of the country.
According to the NMC, at 10:00 on Friday, the typhoon was located approximately 145 km south of Linshui County in the island province of Hainan in southern China.
“Maysak” is expected to move in a northwest direction at a speed of 10-15 km/h, gaining strength. Forecasts indicate that on Friday afternoon it will make landfall in the coastal area between Linshui and Ledong counties on Hainan.
After crossing Hainan Island, it will enter the Beibu Gulf and on Saturday evening will make a second landfall in the coastal area near the border between the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GXAR) in southern China and the northern part of Vietnam. After that, the intensity of the storm will gradually weaken.
From 2:00 PM Friday to 2:00 PM Saturday, strong winds are expected in most of the South China Sea, the Qiongzhou Strait, Beibu Gulf, the Zhongsha and Xisha Islands, coastal areas of the central and western parts of Guangdong Province, as well as in the coastal areas of Hainan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Meanwhile, heavy or torrential rains are expected in some areas of the central and western parts of Guangdong province, the southern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and on Hainan Island.
In Hainan, local authorities have imposed a complete suspension of all transportation across the entire island province. All railway services connecting the island with other regions were suspended on Friday and Saturday. Ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait were halted at 2 a.m. on Friday, and the suspension is expected to last from one to two days, depending on weather conditions.
Provincial meteorological agencies have issued reminders about the need to shelter offshore platforms and vessels from the winds and have called on local authorities to strengthen safety measures for fishing vessels, as well as coastal and mountainous tourist facilities.
