On July 1, the 5th Summer School of the Humanities Institute of NSU opened at Novosibirsk State University for students in grades 9–10. This year, as in the previous year, students who have only completed 8th grade were also invited to participate, provided they are prepared to work according to the program designed for older students.
The Summer School of the Humanities Institute offers an opportunity to try on the role of students, decide on a future profession, and see how profound and promising the humanities can be. The Summer School is attended by 148 students from grades 8–10 from various regions of Russia: the participants came from Novosibirsk and Novosibirsk Oblast, Altai and Krasnoyarsk Krais, Kemerovo, Irkutsk, Sverdlovsk, and Samara Oblasts, the Republic of Buryatia, the Republic of Khakassia, the Republic of Sakha, and Saint Petersburg.
—Since the launch of the school five years ago, the number of participants has increased annually. Since last year, it has stabilized at around 150 people. In our opinion, this is the optimal number to organize an intellectual competition with team divisions. But if the number of participants grows, we will only be glad. For us, this is an opportunity to come up with new formats for conducting the school,– noted the chairperson of the Summer School Organizing Committee, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs of the Humanities Institute of NSU, Candidate of Philological SciencesTatyana Belitsa.
At the ceremonial opening held at the site of the new NSU campus, the NSU rector, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, spokeDmitry Pyshny:
—Welcome to the walls of Novosibirsk National Research State University. I have carefully studied the program and know that you will have exciting tests, which will allow you to earn points that will help you in the future to enter NSU. I am a scientist in the natural sciences field — chemistry, but quite often in my free time I listen to lectures in the humanities. You know, it is actually so fascinating. In the humanities, when they start interacting with other fields or technologies, such as computer science and mathematics, epochal breakthroughs happen. Look at how everything is changing now thanks to large language models. The humanities are our thoughts, our relationships with other communities. These same language models begin to inject soul into robotics or the internet, thereby facilitating the relationship of technology with us. Everything is for us and all thanks to the humanities. Absorb, fight, earn points, and come to us. Happy studying!
A rich educational and cultural program has been planned for the participants, which was developed over more than six months. Leading lecturers from NSU and staff from academic institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have been invited as speakers for the Summer School; expert lectures, practical and theoretical sessions, and excursions across the Novosibirsk Scientific Center are provided.
—Our Summer School addresses several objectives at once. First, it is an opportunity to see Novosibirsk State University from the inside, get acquainted with both the fields of study and the students, and understand what appeals to you and whether you want to apply here. Second, it is a chance to earn points, receive a prize-winner diploma or a participant certificate, which can be used as individual achievements when applying to the university. Third, it is simply an opportunity to have a good time in the summer,— said the Deputy Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Summer School, Deputy Director of the Humanities Institute of NSU for Research, Candidate of Historical SciencesTatyana Morozova.
The participants are divided into six areas: Oriental studies, journalism, history and archaeology, computer and applied linguistics, linguistics (foreign languages), and philology and literary studies. The program is updated annually: instructors prepare new materials and assignments.
All participants of the Summer School can earn points for their work within their field, as well as based on the results of the intellectual competition. The students who score the highest points receive diplomas of the first, second, and third degree, while all others are awarded a participant certificate. An important condition for receiving the certificate is attendance of at least half of all the classes specified in the program.
Diplomas and certificates from the GI Summer School can be counted as individual achievements when applying to any program of study at the Humanities Institute of NSU. For example, in 2026, applicants can use the results of participation in GI summer schools from 2023 to 2025: 10 points for first place, 7 points for second place, 4 points for third place, and 2 points for a participant certificate.
—We have tried to take into account the feedback from last year’s participants as much as possible and improve the conditions at the school. For example, we moved some of the classes to the recently opened building of lecture halls. This is a new modern educational space that we introduce to the students. We hope that many of them will become our students in the coming years,— Tatiana Belitsa concluded.
