Islamabad, July 3 /Xinhua/ — At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured after a passenger bus fell into a deep ravine in the Shirani district of Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan, local authorities told Xinhua News Agency.
According to a representative of the government of the province, Shahid Rind, the death toll increased after several wounded individuals died from their injuries during transportation to hospitals and while receiving treatment.
Earlier, Deputy District Commissioner Hazrat Wali Kakar told Xinhua that the accident occurred near the border between the Shirani district of Balochistan province and the Dera Ismail Khan district of the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Police and rescuers from both districts arrived at the scene and transported the bodies of the deceased and the injured to nearby hospitals.
As reported by Xinhua citing local police, the bus driver lost control on a sharp turn in mountainous terrain on the route from Quetta, the administrative center of Balochistan province, to the Peshawar district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to H. V. Kakar, the bus departed from Quetta with 36 passengers on board, and then several more people boarded it along the way.
President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the incident and condolences to the families of the deceased, as well as wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He instructed the relevant agencies to provide the wounded with the best medical care and stated that the entire nation stands in solidarity with the affected families. –0–
