Shelling of Ukraine
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), citing Ukrainian authorities, reports that from June 26 to the morning of July 1, as a result of ongoing hostilities and shelling, civilians in Ukraine, including children, were killed and injured. The most severely affected were the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions; attacks also continued in the Sumy, Kherson, Donetsk, and Chernihiv regions. Humanitarian agencies, with UN support, are providing first aid to those affected, as well as distributing materials for emergency housing repairs, drinking water, and food supplies.
The situation in Gaza
The humanitarian group coordinating aid efforts in the occupied Palestinian territories has warned that the ongoing expansion of areas controlled by Israel in Gaza is increasing threats to the civilian population. According to humanitarian organizations, since the ceasefire came into effect, Israeli military forces have used lethal force to prevent people from entering the areas they control. Additionally, movement restrictions continue to cause delays and interruptions in the delivery of vital assistance.
The situation in El-Obeid
The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) continues to document the consequences of drone strikes on the city of El-Obeid in Sudan. According to available data, the attacks have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, damage to schools, a displaced persons center, and energy and transport infrastructure. The destruction further restricts the population’s access to water, electricity, and medical care. OHCHR has once again called on all parties to comply with international law. On Friday, the UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session dedicated to the situation in El-Obeid.
Report on AI
Presenting the first report of the Independent International Scientific Group on Artificial Intelligence, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on governments not to delay the development of international AI regulations. The UN chief emphasized that the report honestly addresses both the enormous potential of artificial intelligence and the threats associated with it. The main conclusion, according to Guterres, is that the faster AI develops without common rules, the fewer opportunities governments and society have to influence its future.
