As part of the national project “Infrastructure for Life,” measures aimed at reducing accidents and improving road infrastructure are being actively implemented in the regions. These include updating road signs and markings, creating new sidewalks, installing barrier and pedestrian fences, as well as street lighting lines.
“Road safety determines the lives and health of our citizens. For this, we carry out comprehensive work, paying great attention to the accompanying infrastructure. Part of the work within the framework of the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life’ has been completed: since the beginning of the year, 14.5 thousand linear meters of street lighting lines have been installed on regional and local road network facilities, about 27.6 thousand linear meters of barrier and 7 thousand linear meters of pedestrian fences. In addition, 111.5 thousand linear meters of sidewalks have been equipped and more than 5.6 thousand road signs installed. Safety elements are also placed at hazard-prone sections, identified thanks to the systematic work of the State Traffic Inspectorate staff. This is an example of a team approach, where the efforts of inspectors and infrastructure solutions complement each other. The State Traffic Inspectorate, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, makes an invaluable contribution to ensuring road safety in the country. And we continue our joint work to solve the common task of reducing accident rates and saving lives,” said Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
One of the key objectives of the national project “Infrastructure for Life” is to reduce fatalities from traffic accidents by one and a half times by 2030 and by two times by 2036 compared to the 2023 figure.
“Priority is given to roads leading to schools, hospitals, kindergartens, and other socially significant institutions. Most of these facilities are equipped comprehensively so that the road is safe for all road users. In total, this year, thanks to the national project “Infrastructure for Life,” 1,500 traffic lights will be installed on regional and local roads, 261,400 linear meters of street lighting lines, over 800,000 linear meters of barriers, and 160,000 linear meters of pedestrian fences. Specialists will also arrange 690,700 linear meters of sidewalks, 1,100 artificial speed bumps, 1,600 bus stops, and install more than 120,000 road signs,” said Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin.
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) also help enhance road safety across the country.
“We are developing ITS in 58 regions and 66 cities within them. Smart systems automatically regulate traffic light operation depending on the road situation, control compliance with traffic rules using cameras and violation recording systems, inform drivers about road works, accidents, ice, and other hazards through electronic signs and navigation services, and also assist emergency services. As a result, the urban environment becomes more predictable, the likelihood of road traffic accidents decreases, and the comfort and safety of all road users improve. We can highlight the leaders in ITS implementation – Yaroslavl Oblast and the Republic of Tatarstan, where various elements are being tested within the special economic zone ‘Alabuga.’ We have an indicator – achieving the ITS maturity level. Out of 66 cities, 20 have already reached the first level. This means a functioning system has been created there that already produces results. Our next goal is to raise all 66 cities to this high level,” noted Radik Farazutdinov, Deputy Head of the Federal Road Agency.
In the Moscow region this season, along regional roads in 32 urban and municipal districts, 105 new sidewalks will be built with a total length of 68 km as part of the national project “Infrastructure for Life.” For example, road workers have already completed the construction of a sidewalk 850 linear meters long in the village of Krasnye Orly (Chekhov urban district). Currently, more than 7.4 km of sidewalks are under construction in seven districts of the Moscow region: Bogorodsky, Volokolamsky, Krasnogorsky, Odintsovsky, Pavlovo-Posadsky, Solnechnogorsky, and Stupinsky. For pedestrian comfort and safety, all facilities will be equipped with lowered curbstones and tactile tiles.
In 2026, 48 pedestrian crossings on regional roads in the Sverdlovsk region will be renovated. They will be equipped with artificial lighting, flashing yellow T7 traffic lights, approaches, fences, and artificial road bumps.
An important role in ensuring road traffic safety is played by artificial outdoor lighting. In the Kostroma region, artificial lighting lines with automatic control that respond to the illumination level have been installed on five sections of the regional road Pyshchug – Pavino – Vokhma – Bogovarovo, with a total length of 8.5 km. A total of 25.6 km of artificial lighting lines are planned to be installed in the region this year.
An important element of road infrastructure is equipped waiting areas for public transport. Special pull-in bays minimize interference with the main flow of traffic during passenger boarding, and bus shelters create safe and comfortable conditions for the passengers themselves.
This year, more than 60 bus shelters will be renovated at national project sites in the Ryazan region. Of these, 14 will be installed on the section of the Tambov – Shatsk route in the Shatsk district, and another 12 on the Voskhod – Ermish highway in the Ermish district. The largest number of stops (19) will be mounted on the Rybnoe (from the M-5 “Ural” highway) – Palnye – Pionersky – Bolshoye Zhukovo – district border route.
