Beijing, July 2 /Xinhua/ — China and the EU will hold the second meeting of the bilateral trade and investment consultation mechanism this fall, said He Yadong, an official spokesman of China’s Ministry of Commerce, at a regular press conference on Thursday.
This mechanism is a newly established platform for regular dialogue in the trade and economic sphere between China and the EU. Both sides agreed to hold one or two ministerial-level meetings each year under this mechanism, said He Yadong.
During the first meeting, both parties focused on three areas aimed at promoting more balanced growth of bilateral trade, rather than reducing trade to achieve balance, he noted.
In emerging sectors, both parties will strive to expand cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence and the “green” transformation. They will explore the potential for cooperation in fields such as trade in services. Furthermore, both parties will also conduct consultations on market access to gradually address mutual concerns.
He said that both sides have reached a consensus on the new characterization of China-European trade and economic relations, agreeing that China and the EU are stable and balanced key trading partners of each other.
The consensus reached will help improve the expectations of companies on both sides and bring greater certainty and positive energy to the economic development of China, the EU, and the whole world, added He Yadong.
According to him, China has invited the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, Maroš Šefčovič, to visit China this autumn to participate in the second meeting of the mechanism.
