Caracas, July 2 /Xinhua/ — Acting President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, on Wednesday declared a seven-day national mourning period in memory of the victims of the powerful earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.
“In memory of the victims, I have decided to declare a national mourning period of seven days, starting from 6:00 PM today,” wrote D. Rodriguez in a statement posted on social media.
“In these moments of deep sorrow, we stand with those affected by this tragedy and reaffirm our commitment to accompany and protect them,” she said.
“The soul of Venezuela is torn apart by the human casualties caused by the devastating earthquakes,” added D. Rodriguez.
According to the latest official data, as of Tuesday, at least 1,943 people have died and more than 10,500 have been injured as a result of the earthquakes.
