High humidity, temperature fluctuations, and constant exposure to precipitation remain among the main factors affecting the condition of building facades in Saint Petersburg. Historical buildings, many of which have been in use for decades, are especially vulnerable and require regular inspection and restoration.

According to specialists in building inspection and restoration of cultural heritage sites, the destruction of facades is most often associated with moisture penetration into the construction materials. In cold weather, water freezes and expands, which gradually leads to the formation of cracks and damage to the finishing elements.

The condition of the facades also depends on the age of the building, the quality of materials, and operating conditions. Additional effects are caused by the urban environment, air pollution, and vibrational loads resulting from heavy traffic.

Experts note that before carrying out restoration work, a comprehensive engineering and technical inspection of the building must be performed. It includes a visual inspection of the structures, instrumental diagnostics, and analysis of the condition of the materials.

Modern technologies allow for the inspection of objects with high precision. In particular, methods such as laser scanning and digital modeling are used, which help identify structural deformations and record the current state of the building without significant intervention in its structure.

“For Saint Petersburg, the topic of preserving architectural heritage is of special importance, since the city has a unique historical development and a large number of cultural heritage sites. In this regard, the demand for specialists skilled in modern methods of building inspection and restoration technologies is increasing. Training such personnel today is becoming one of the important tasks of specialized construction education,” notes a candidate of architecture, associate professor of the Department of Architectural and Construction Structures at SPbGASU.Olga Pastukh.

At SPbGASU, starting from 2026, a training profile “Restoration of Buildings and Structures” is being launched within the “Construction” field. The program is aimed at training restoration engineers and includes the study of technologies for inspecting cultural heritage sites, building structures, and modern restoration methods.

Experts emphasize that timely inspections and maintenance significantly extend the lifespan of facades and reduce the risk of damage to historic buildings.
