Hangzhou, July 1 /Xinhua/ — On Tuesday, China’s first intermodal transport route combining river and sea with zero carbon dioxide emissions was officially launched. A fully electric 10,000-ton displacement container ship departed from the Jiaxing port to the Ningbo-Zhoushan port, both located in Zhejiang Province (East China).
The vessel of Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd. is 127.8 meters long and 21.6 meters wide, with a capacity of 742 standard containers in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). This container ship is equipped with a set of 10 standardized container-type batteries with a total capacity of about 20,000 kWh as its main power source. Its operation is expected to save about 800 tons of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2,000 tons per year.
The Port of Jiaxing is a key transport hub linking the inland waterway system of Zhejiang Province with the coastal shipping network, and the Ningbo-Zhoushan port ranks first in the world in cargo turnover.
According to the Maritime Safety Administration branch in the city of Jiaxing, zero fuel consumption and zero exhaust emissions are maintained throughout the entire new route, which allows for a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 60 kg per TEU transported. This route offers exporters from the Yangtze River Delta region a low-carbon option for transporting goods to global markets. -0-
