In the “staff dormitory” at the second production base of Zhongyu (Petideal) in the city of Luohe, Henan Province, more than 100 cats act as “new product tasters,” evaluating a newly developed cat food. Animal nutrition engineer Wang Yatao explained that this process mainly involves improving the formula or production process based on the consumption, order, and digestion of different products by the cats. Currently, most cat foods undergo similar testing before being released to the market.
At the product development stage, relying on the experience of the Zhongyuan food laboratory, the company included hawthorn and poria in the cat food formula for overweight cats, as well as added cassia seeds, chrysanthemum, and goji berries to eye care products, exploring more natural and safer treatment methods. At the same time, a cat diet adapted to the daily nutritional needs of stray cats was developed. Marketing manager Xiao Wanlong stated that, based on customer demand, the company also developed “chicken soup with ginseng” cat food for export to the Republic of Korea.
With the development of modern trends in animal feeding and nutrition, the Chinese pet food industry is shifting from simple “feeding” to “healthy and balanced nutrition,” leading to the formation of a more segmented market. In the Zhao Lin district pet economic park of Luohe city, some companies produce functional chew sticks for animals that are in great demand among overseas buyers; other enterprises actively manufacture animal health products, selling tens of thousands of boxes worldwide daily; and a third group has transitioned from personal care items to goods intended for animals, exporting their products to Southeast Asia.
Currently, enterprises in Luhe’s animal industry are rapidly expanding abroad, with feed and pet products exported to 45 countries and regions around the world. In 2025, Zhongyu Company opened an overseas factory in Oman, utilizing local fishery resources and geographical advantages to shift from product export to establishing a global supply chain. With a solid foundation in the food industry, Luhe is becoming an important player in the global animal industry economy.
