The situation in Gaza and the West Bank
Despite the ceasefire regime that came into effect eight months ago, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains severe. This was stated at the Security Council meeting by Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Coordinator of the UN for the Middle East Peace Process. According to him, Israeli airstrikes and military operations in Gaza continue. Alakbarov condemned the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the violence against civilians, emphasizing that all those responsible must be held accountable.
Escalation between Afghanistan and Pakistan
Secretary-General António Guterres is deeply concerned about the escalation of violence between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He calls for an immediate ceasefire, ensuring the protection of civilians, and resolving disputes through diplomatic means. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has confirmed that Pakistani airstrikes last night in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar caused civilian casualties and injuries. It is reported that the attacks also led to displacement of the population.
Consequences of earthquakes in Venezuela
According to preliminary data from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the direct economic damage caused to Venezuela by the earthquakes on June 24 is estimated at $6.7 billion, which amounts to about six percent of the country’s GDP. The majority of the direct damage is associated with the destruction of residential buildings and economic facilities. It is estimated that around 1.7 million structures were within the affected area. However, as emphasized by UNDP, the main consequence of the disaster remains the tragedies experienced by individuals and communities caught in the disaster’s epicenter.
Conference on Combating Terrorism
Speaking at the opening of the Fourth High-Level Conference on Counter-Terrorism, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on states to strengthen international cooperation in combating terrorism while addressing the causes that allow terrorist groups to recruit and radicalize people. Guterres also reminded that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, which guides international efforts in this area.
