Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on including the museum-reserve “Museum of the World Ocean” in Kaliningrad in the list of especially valuable objects of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“The museum infrastructure is consistently developing in the country, and new cultural sites are becoming important attractions for residents and tourists. I am confident that the new status of the Museum of the World Ocean in Kaliningrad, granted in the Year of the Unity of the Peoples of Russia, will attract even more visitors and help educate many generations of researchers. Thanks to the President’s support, the construction of the new building ‘Planet Ocean’ with an area of over 10,000 sq. m. was completed in 2024, and on August 18, 2025, Geography Day, it was officially opened. The unique architecture in the form of a glass sphere has become a new landmark of Kaliningrad. Today, exhibitions, an educational center, and an aquarium complex with more than 2,000 marine inhabitants operate in the building,” said Marat Khusnullin.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that the construction of the “Planet Ocean” building began as early as 2013 but was delayed. Thanks to the transfer of the facility to the management of UKC “Unified Customer” in 2021, work was intensified. They were conducted within the framework of the comprehensive state program “Construction,” overseen by the Ministry of Construction.
As told by Karen Oganesyan, CEO of the LLC “Unified Customer”, the architectural design of the new Building “Planet Ocean” is an elongated composition of three blocks, one of which is made in the form of a glass sphere with a diameter of 42 meters.
“Special attention was required for the canopy over the entrance area – it is styled like a wave. One of the most complex stages of construction was the commissioning of the facility’s life-support systems,” added Karen Oganesyan.
The “Planet Ocean” building offers visitors exhibition spaces including the “Baltic Laboratory,” the “Great Ocean” hall, the “Technology Laboratory,” the “Beauty Laboratory,” and the “Library.” There are 29 aquariums with a total volume of over 1,100 cubic meters. Each aquarium represents different bodies of water from around the world and contains more than 2,000 fish and other marine fauna.
In addition to the exhibition area, the new building complex houses the Oceania educational center, where lectures are held and thematic events and educational sessions take place.
