Beijing, June 30 /Xinhua/ — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a meeting in Beijing on Tuesday with the candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations, former President of the UN General Assembly María Fernanda Espinosa.
M. F. Espinosa, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, stated that today the world urgently needs a UN that is capable of more promptly preventing crises, carrying out closer coordination and cooperation, and taking more effective action.
Emphasizing that she firmly adheres to the One China principle, M. F. Espinosa noted that she supports the four global initiatives proposed by the Chinese side and highly appreciates the PRC’s long-term commitment to multilateralism, upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and protecting the common interests of developing countries.
M. F. Espinosa expressed her readiness, together with the international community including China, to balancedly promote the three fundamental UN principles, namely peace and security, development, and human rights, while simultaneously strengthening the authority of the organization.
Wan Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, in turn pointed out that under the complex and tense international situation, the UN needs to awaken its vital energy, strengthen its capacity for action, fulfill its proper role, and live up to the expectations of all parties.
The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that China has always been a staunch supporter of the UN cause and multilateralism.
As Wang Yi pointed out, the election of the next UN Secretary-General concerns not only the future direction of the organization’s reform and development but also the vital interests of its member states. According to the Chinese diplomat, any candidate must strictly abide by the UN Charter, possess high competence, be impartial and honest, and responsibly fulfill their duties.
China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and an important representative of the Global South, will participate responsibly in the process of selecting the Secretary-General and support the UN in restoring its authority and viability, assured Wang Yi. –0–
