Moscow, June 29 /Xinhua/ — Russia will take political and military-technical measures in response to Finland’s decision to lift the ban on the import and stationing of nuclear weapons on its territory. This was stated on Monday by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on the amendments to the nuclear energy law and the criminal code approved by Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
“Considering that the highest political leadership in Helsinki and the Finnish competent authorities have repeatedly officially stated that there is no direct military threat to the Finns from Russia, this decision seems all the more groundless, carrying real threats to the national security of our country, countering which will require Russia to take additional political and military-technical response measures. And such measures, let no one doubt, will be taken timely and effectively,” reads the comment by M. Zakharova, published on the website of the Russian foreign policy ministry.
As the diplomat emphasized, Helsinki has officially formalized its readiness for full participation in NATO’s nuclear deterrence. “The results of the vote on the bill /125 deputies ‘for’, 61 — ‘against’ with 13 absent/ represent a picture as striking as it is unsightly of the victory of the deeply rooted blind Russophobia in Finland over what always seemed to us to be the Finns’ pragmatic common sense,” stated M. Zakharova.
According to her, after joining NATO, Finland’s renunciation of its previously balanced and reasonable policy of non-alignment with military alliances “literally transformed before our eyes into a real prospect for this once neutral country to become a compliant instrument of the nuclear ambitions of an aggressive militarist bloc.”
“In this regard, the Finnish people should consider whether this decision by their elites will lead to increased security for Finland itself,” the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded.
