UN, June 27 /Xin Hua/ — UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the world organization will provide full support to efforts to eliminate the consequences of earthquakes in Venezuela. This was reported on Friday by his press secretary Stéphane Dujarric.
According to him, A. Guterres on Thursday evening in a telephone conversation with the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, “expressed solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela in connection with the devastating earthquakes.”
S. Dujarric added that the UN Secretary-General has promised “full cooperation from the UN system” in supporting efforts for emergency assistance undertaken by the government of Venezuela.
Meanwhile, the UN and its humanitarian partners are rapidly increasing response measures, assessing the situation, and mobilizing aid.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher allocated 15 million US dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund to provide urgent assistance to save lives in Venezuela, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson announced.
According to him, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) supports efforts to coordinate on the ground, facilitates the exchange of information, and works with partners to ensure the effective deployment of international search and rescue teams.
According to S. Duzharrik, a total of 30 such groups are heading to Venezuela. The composition includes more than 1600 people and 100 dogs from various countries.
