Chengdu, June 26 /Xinhua/ — The first generating unit of the Shuanzhyankou hydropower station in Sichuan Province /Southwest China/ was officially connected to the grid and began generating electricity on Friday, marking the start of operation of this world-class hydroelectric project.
The installed capacity of this hydroelectric power station, located in the upper reaches of the Dadu River, is 2 million kW. It is expected that after commissioning, the HPP will generate approximately 7.7 billion kWh of electricity per year.
With a total reservoir capacity of approximately 2.9 billion cubic meters and a maximum design dam height of 315 m, this hydroelectric power plant will significantly increase the regulating capacity of the hydroelectric power plants located downstream on the river and strengthen the flood protection system throughout the river basin.
The project received construction approval in 2015. After 11 years of construction, the filling of the reservoir was completed in the second phase and the first power unit was successfully commissioned.
GES will also play an important role in China’s energy transformation, and it is expected that after reaching full capacity, it will allow saving 17 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 46 million tons per year.
In addition to facilitating the transmission of environmentally clean electricity from the southwest region of China to other regions, this project will promote the development of an integrated system of environmentally clean energy, combining hydropower, wind power, and solar power.
