Moscow, June 25 /Sinxua/ — The Romanian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Cristian Istrate, was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was handed a note on the declaration of the Romanian Consul General in Saint Petersburg as a persona non grata. This was reported on Thursday by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“On June 25, the Ambassador of Romania to the Russian Federation K. Istrate, who was handed a note from the Ministry about the declaration of persona non grata of the General Consul of Romania in Saint Petersburg and the upcoming closure of the consular institution of this country located there,” the statement said.
An appropriate step was taken in response to the actions of the Rumanian side. “This measure represents a response to the unfounded withdrawal of consent for the work of the General Consulate of Russia in Konstanz and the announcement of its head as persona non grata,” the Russian foreign policy agency stated.
At the end of May, Bucharest placed responsibility on Russia for the crash of a drone onto the roof of a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați. After this incident, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced the decision to declare the Russian Federation’s consul in Romania persona non grata and to close the Russian Federation’s general consulate in Constanța.
