Abu Dhabi/Cairo, June 24 /Xin Hua/ — US Secretary of State Mark Rubio said on Tuesday that no country has the right to charge fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
“This is an international waterway. No country has the right to charge duties or fees for passage through an international waterway. This is what current international law states,” he said to journalists upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, beginning a tour of the countries allied with the USA in the Persian Gulf region.
On Wednesday, M. Rubio is supposed to meet with the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after which he will go to Kuwait and Bahrain, where he will participate in a meeting of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC).
Several countries in the region, on whose territory American military bases are located, were subjected to retaliatory shelling by Iran following American-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic on February 28. The UAE was among the most affected.
Also on Tuesday, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the situation in the region after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the USA and Iran with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Badr Abdel Ati. The interlocutors emphasized the necessity of further coordination to counter current regional challenges and achieve peace, stability, and development, according to the statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. –0–
