Beijing, June 23 /Xin Hua/ — In the first five months of 2026, the foreign trade turnover of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region /Northern China/ with its two main trading partners — Russia and Mongolia — increased by 61.3% year-on-year to 62.58 billion yuan /about 9.18 billion USD/, accounting for 58.1% of the total volume of Inner Mongolia’s foreign trade for the same period, reported the Chinese daily newspaper “Naiman jingbao”.
According to the statistical data of the local customs, in January-May of this year, the foreign trade turnover of Inner Mongolia reached 107.72 billion yuan, an increase of 27.1 percent compared to the same period last year, which turned out to be 11.8 percentage points higher than the average growth rate of a similar indicator across the whole country. In particular, exports grew by 22 percent to 39.98 billion yuan, imports amounted to 67.74 billion yuan with an increase of 30.4 percent.
For the first five months, the volumes of imports of copper concentrate and coal into Inner Mongolia amounted to 33.41 billion and 16.4 billion yuan respectively, increasing by 49.5% and 30.7% year-on-year. And the export volumes of agricultural products, aluminum rolled products, computers, and their components from this region amounted to 6.22 billion, 1.59 billion, and 1.17 billion yuan respectively, demonstrating growth of 17.2%, 131.4%, and 190.5% year-on-year.
By trade forms, the total volume of mutual trade between residents of the border areas of China and Russia in the city of Manzhouli and between residents of the border areas of China and Mongolia in the city of Erenhot amounted to 230 million and 160 million yuan respectively for the first five months, which is 82.1% and 223.8% more in annual terms.
In January-May of this year, there were 3,349 enterprises engaged in foreign trade operations in Inner Mongolia, which is 25.7% more than the previous year. 3,201 of them are private enterprises, whose foreign trade turnover reached 93.64 billion yuan, both indicators increased by 26.2% and 41.1% in annual terms, respectively.
During the reporting period, 106 enterprises with foreign investment were registered in Inner Mongolia, conducting foreign trade operations, with a total export and import volume reaching 2.67 billion yuan, both indicators increased by 30.9% and 8.8% respectively.
According to the local customs service, in the first five months, foreign trade of Inner Mongolia as a whole showed a trend towards improvement while maintaining stability.In the further development of the potential of foreign trade, the local customs will actively implement a pilot free trade zone modernization strategy, launch a special campaign to simplify cross-border trade procedures, improve the customs clearance process, increase the efficiency of supervision, and contribute to ensuring sustainable growth in foreign trade and improving the quality of its development in Inner Mongolia.
