Brest, June 22 /Xin Hua/ — The 2nd International Forum of the Union State of Belarus and Russia “Great Heritage — Common Future” was held in the Belarusian city of Brest from June 20 to 22, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. The event was attended by parliamentary delegations from the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, public figures, representatives of the scientific community, and international experts.
Welcome words to the forum participants were delivered by the presidents of Belarus and Russia. As noted in his greeting by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, the primary task is to protect the historical truth from those who rewrite history, demolish monuments to heroes, and try to consign the exploits of fathers and grandfathers to oblivion.
In turn, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin emphasized in his greeting that the presence at the forum of delegations from friendly countries confirms that the majority of the international community categorically does not accept attempts to whitewash the atrocities committed by the Hitlerites and their accomplices and is ready to fight against any manifestations of neo-Nazism.
The First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia, Chairman of the House of Representatives /lower house/ of the National Assembly of Belarus, Igor Sergeenko, noted that Belarus and Russia remain an impregnable bastion in the struggle for the preservation of the true memory of the Great Patriotic War. “Today, like the multinational garrison of brave defenders of the Brest Fortress, we remain an impregnable bastion in the struggle for the preservation of the true memory of the Great Patriotic War and its worldwide historical significance,” he said.
Within the framework of the forum, the 70th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia took place, at which the statement “On the genocide of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” was adopted. The text of the statement emphasizes that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia considers it unacceptable to forget the crimes committed by the Nazis.It is noted that the protection of the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War events is the most important condition for preventing crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, preventing manifestations of Nazism, and maintaining universal peace and agreement. –0–
