Dmitry Chernyshenko: Russian schoolchildren won 4 gold and 2 silver medals at the second Open International Geographical Olympiad.
At the University Gymnasium of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the results of the second Open International Geographical Olympiad (II openGeo 2026) were summed up. In the intellectual competition, organized by the Ministry of Education and M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, 125 high school students from 25 countries participated.
Russian schoolchildren won four gold and two silver medals. The high achievements of the children and their mentors were noted by Deputy Chairman of the Government Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.
“As our President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin notes, patriotism, a sense of involvement in the fate of the Motherland, and responsibility for its future arise from knowledge about its history, geography, cultural and natural heritage. We congratulate our schoolchildren with six medals at the second Open International Geographical Olympiad. Such talented kids represent the future! We thank the teachers, mentors, and parents for their support. The government, in turn, will continue to unlock the potential of the children, including through the measures of the national project ‘Youth and Children’,” emphasized Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Our country has once again confirmed that the domestic geographic school is one of the strongest in the world. The guys from the Russian team have shown high achievements for the second year in a row. Each of these awards is the result of hard work, deep knowledge, love for geography, and true team spirit. You have shown the whole world that Russia is rich in talents, and your victories are contributions to the future of our country, its scientific and intellectual potential,” noted the Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.
Gold medals were awarded:
§ Ti on Pulyaev (GBOU “Moscow Gymnasium at South-West №1543”);
§ Anzhelina Gayazova (University Gymnasium (boarding school) of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University);
§ Mii Desert Pustynny (OANO “School “Letovo”)
§ Stepan Klepov (OANO “Center for Pedagogical Mastery School”).
Silver medals were won by:
§ Danila Borisov (MBOU Urban District of Balashikha “Saltykovskaya Gymnasium”);
§ Semyon Sitnikov (municipal autonomous general education institution of the municipality of the city of Krasnodar “Gymnasium No. 40 named after Viktor Buglakov”).
In addition, the Russian national team became the best in the unofficial ranking of teams participating in the Olympics.
Team leaders and coaches: leading research associate at the Faculty of Geography, MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov Pavel Kirillov and associate professor at the Faculty of Geography, MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov Dmitry Bogachev, geography teacher at OANO “New School” Anna Romashina, and lecturer at NIU “Higher School of Economics” Artur Petrosyan.
At the Olympiad, young geographers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Brazil, Brunei, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Montenegro, and the Philippines participated.
The absolute winner of the II openGeo 2026 was recognized as Sarta Kamalkishor (India).
All the olympiad tasks were completed by participants in English.
The scientific committee and jury of II openGeo 2026 include leading scientists-geographers and educators from Russia (Geographical Faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences), Kazakhstan, Serbia.

Open International Geographical Olympiad (https://opengeo.msu.ru/en)â – this is a competition for high school students, which is held as an open alternative international olympiad for schoolchildren and students, selected based on the results of the national geographical olympiad and other intellectual contests in the field of geography from the CIS countries, SCO, BRICS, and other states. The event is aimed at popularizing geographical knowledge and skills among talented schoolchildren and strengthening international educational and academic ties.
In 2025, schoolchildren from 23 countries participated in the first Open Geographical Olympiad. The Russian teamwon four gold and two silver medals, taking first place in the unofficial team standings.
