London, June 22 /Xinhua/ — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday at 10 Downing Street that he is stepping down as leader of the ruling Labour Party, and unveiled the plan of his government cabinet.
K. Starmer said that he is aware of the position of Labour Party deputies regarding his candidacy for the party leadership in the upcoming general election.
“I accept it with understanding,” he said.
K. Starmer stated that he will remain in the position of prime minister until the completion of the election of the new leader and will do everything in his power to “ensure an orderly transfer of power.”
He added that he would give his successor “full and unconditional support.”
K. Starmer stated that he approached the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party with a request to set the schedule for the party leader elections, with the nomination of candidates beginning on July 9.
