Tehran, June 20 /Xinhua/ — Official representative of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmail Baghaei stated on Friday that the planned meeting of delegations from Iran and the USA in Switzerland has been postponed and may be held in the coming days.
Speaking to journalists, E. Bagaï explained that consultations on the next stage of negotiations are conducted through intermediaries. The new date will be announced as soon as the conditions are determined, according to a statement from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He noted that in accordance with the recently signed memorandum of understanding between Iran and the USA, the start of negotiations depends on the fulfillment of the document’s provisions, including the cessation of war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, lifting the US naval blockade, resuming free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days, withdrawing Iranian oil from under US sanctions, as well as unblocking Iranian assets.
E. Bagai said that the meeting on Friday was originally intended for signing a memorandum and discussing the procedure for conducting negotiations on the final agreement. However, according to him, the meeting ceased to be an urgent necessity after the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian and his American colleague Donald Trump signed the document electronically on Thursday morning.
E. Bagai denied reports that Iran had invited the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect its nuclear sites, stating that according to the memorandum, negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program should take place within 60 days provided that necessary requirements are met.
He stated that, according to the memorandum, Iran retains the status quo of its nuclear program, limiting IAEA inspections to sites such as the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Access to sites, previously impossible due to attacks by the US and Israel, will depend on the negotiation process and its results, added E. Baghai. –0–
