Manila, June 18 /Xinhua/ — At least 78 people died, 30 went missing as a result of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that occurred on June 8 near the coast of Mindanao Island in the south of the Philippines. This was reported on Thursday by the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.

According to him, the earthquake affected more than 357 thousand households or about 1.5 million people. Currently, almost 22 thousand people are located in 47 evacuation centers.

Approximately 74.7 thousand houses were damaged, 13.7 thousand of them completely destroyed. In total, 774 infrastructure facilities were damaged, leading to losses amounting to 1.29 billion Philippine pesos (about 21.3 million US dollars). Agricultural losses are estimated at 29.8 million pesos (almost 493 thousand dollars), the council reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the tectonic earthquake occurred on June 8 at 07:37 local time. The epicenter of the underground tremors was located 32 km southwest of the coast of the city of Maasim in Sarangani province on the island of Mindanao. The focus was at a depth of 33 km.

The Philippines often experiences seismic activity because the country is located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” This zone, at the junction of tectonic plate boundaries, is known for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. –0–
