The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, welcomed the signing of the initial memorandum between Iran and the USA aimed at ending the war, and stated the agency’s readiness to begin practical work, including the inspection of Iran’s nuclear program.
“We believe that recognizing the indispensable role of the IAEA is a good starting point,” Grossi said to journalists in Geneva on Thursday.
According to him, the agency must now “sit down at the negotiating table” with American and Iranian colleagues to develop specific steps for implementationagreements reached.
Negotiations within 60 days
According to IAEA reports, the memorandum provides for negotiations to be held within no more than 60 days with the aim of concluding a final agreement. One of the key issues remains Iran’s uranium enrichment, while Tehran must confirm the absence of intentions to create nuclear weapons.
The document also provides for the opening of the Hormuz Strait for international navigation and the easing of US and UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

Answering journalists’ questions at the UN office in Geneva, Grossi refused to speculate about possible obstacles on the way to negotiations.
“We are only beginning this process and must proceed on the basis that all parties act in good faith and are interested in achieving success,” he noted.
Commenting on the possibility of an agreed reduction in the level of uranium enrichment in Iran, the head of the IAEA emphasized that there are many options for a solution.
“There are various alternatives. In Iran’s current reserves, there are materials of varying degrees of enrichment, and we will see what the parties agree upon,” he said.
Single access to objects
Grossi noted that access for the agency to Iranian nuclear sites does not yet correspond to the necessary level.
Alongside continuing contacts with Iranian authorities, the IAEA, according to its words, has a “sufficiently clear understanding” of which sites and locations must necessarily be accessed.
“Right now, I would say,” the head of the agency emphasized, “real technical work may begin.”
