UN, June 18 /Xinhua/ — Armed groups, some of which briefly detained humanitarian workers, are hindering the fight against the Ebola outbreak in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/. This was stated on Wednesday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs /OCHA/.
As reported, on Tuesday five people involved in combating the infection were briefly detained by armed groups at the epicenter of the outbreak—the Ituri province, which accounts for more than 90 percent of all confirmed cases of the disease.
The UKHVT noted that in the southern Kivu province, access to a number of areas remains seriously restricted due to ongoing hostilities, forcing civilians to leave their homes. On Monday, as a result of clashes in the Mwenga and Shabunda territories, nearly 20 thousand people were forced to abandon their homes. Displaced families require food, shelter, medical assistance, safe drinking water, and protection.
According to the UKGV, humanitarian access in the Fizzy territory remains in question: repeated interference by armed groups still threatens the delivery of aid and the safety of humanitarian workers.
Only in Southern Kyiv from January to May, at least 57 incidents were recorded directly affecting humanitarian organization employees, including threats to their addresses, obstruction of aid delivery, and movement restrictions.
“Despite these enormous difficulties, the UN and its humanitarian partners continue to provide support to national authorities in containing the outbreak and delivering aid,” UKHSA stated, adding, however, that the safety of humanitarian workers cannot be ensured without appropriate guarantees.
The UN once again called on all parties to protect the civilian population and ensure safe, swift, and unimpeded access to those in need of assistance.
