On June 9, students of SPbGASU, studying in the fourth-sixth year of the Department of Transport Systems and Road and Bridge Construction (TSiDMS), took part in a unique technical excursion “Cable-Stayed Bridges of Petersburg.”

The event was organized by the Stroykompleks-5 Group of Companies with the support of the Russian national group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). The excursion became part of an initiative to transfer accumulated engineering experience to future generations of bridge specialists.

Specially for our students, prepared and conducted a programStanislav ShulmanA – a famous St. Petersburg bridge engineer, general director of the company “Stroykompleks-5”, member of IABSE, participant in the construction of the protective facilities complex of Petersburg against flooding, the Baikal-Amur Mainline, and a number of other large-scale infrastructure projects. Under his leadership, during a seven-hour bus excursion, students examined the bridge structures of Petersburg and the suburbs from an engineering perspective, studied the features of their design and construction.

The tour route included the first cable-stayed pedestrian bridge in the Northern capital over the Ligovsky Canal, a cable-stayed heat pipeline bridge in the residential area “Baltic Pearl”, large cable-stayed bridges on the Ring Road, bridge structures of the Western High-Speed Diameter, and a number of objects in the central part of the city.

Special attention of the participants was drawn to the suspension bridge over the Malaya Sestra River in Sestroretsk. This very structure became the jewel of the program: the project for its reconstruction was developed by the veryStanislav Shulman,What allowed the students to learn about engineering solutions from the first-person perspective.

“Stanislav Alexandrovich, sincerely passionate about his life’s work, made us fall even more in love with bridges. He revealed and illuminated from all sides the topic that we have studied very little so far – cable-stayed bridges. He provided an enormous wealth of knowledge, supported by visual examples, which will be very useful in our future professional activities,” remarked one of the participants of the excursion.

Employees and students of the Department of Transport Systems and Road-Bridge Construction of SPbGASU express their gratitude to the organizers of the excursionStanislav ShulmanиYulia Egorova(JSC “Stroykompleks-5”).
