Beijing, June 17 /Xin Hua/ — On June 12, a China-Europe train loaded with 55 containers departed from CPP Ulanhot /an autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, Northern China/, which indicates that since the launch of the first train along the “central corridor” of international freight routes between China and Europe in 2013, the total number of trains that have passed through it has exceeded 25 thousand, according to a statement published on Tuesday on the website of the Erenhot city government.
Erenhot represents the only border crossing point in the “central corridor” of China-Europe freight transport. According to statistics, since the launch of the first China-Europe train in 2013 through the China-Mongolia-Russia (CMR) route at Erenhot, the volume of cargo passing through it has steadily increased, reaching 1,000 in 2018, 5,000 in 2020, 10,000 in 2022, and 20,000 by 2025. The rapid development of China-Europe freight train service has become possible thanks to the continuous improvement of the CMR infrastructure at Erenhot and the enhancement of the level of cross-border cooperation.
Being an important pragmatic project for the joint implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative, the China-Europe trains continue to densify the logistics network throughout Asia and Europe. Currently, the number of China-Europe railway routes passing through the Khorgos Dry Port has increased to 75. While at the initial stage of operation such trains mainly transported metals, ceramics, clothing, footwear, and headwear, the current assortment of goods transported by them mainly includes automobiles powered by new energy sources, electronic products, and household appliances.At the same time, the share of goods produced by China with high added value increased from less than 10 percent to more than 40 percent.
This year, a pilot free trade zone was officially opened in Inner Mongolia, and Erenhot is part of this zone.
The Erden-Khotso area of the aforementioned zone, with a planned area of 18.35 sq. km, prioritizes the development of sectors such as international trade, international logistics, cross-border tourism, and international medical services, promising to become a key hub in the China-Mongolia-Russia economic corridor and a model of friendly cooperation with neighboring countries.
Considering the functional positioning of the Erhen-Khotso part of the aforementioned zone, the railway department continues to make efforts to improve the efficiency of cross-border logistics, promoting the mechanism of “daily dialogue and monthly meetings” with the Mongolian station Dzhamyn-Ude.
At the same time, a “green channel” was opened at the CPP Eren-Hotu for China-Europe trains, significantly facilitating the reduction of customs clearance time for each freight train. Currently, about 13 China-Europe trains pass through this border checkpoint daily. -0-
