According to the results of a survey recently published by the Associated Press, about two-thirds of Americans believe that the concept of the “American Dream” is unattainable, and among young people this indicator is even higher. Released by the administration of D.Trump’s tariff war and military actions against Iran have led to supply chain disruptions, rising inflation, and a significant reduction in consumer spending; excessive medical expenses have become an unbearable burden on patients; the sharp increase in education costs has resulted in many young people being burdened with huge debts even before receiving their diplomas… American families are experiencing colossal financial pressure, collapsing on them from all sides, and they practically have nowhere to run.
When ordinary people, even working conscientiously, cannot resist systemic risks caused by inflation, diseases, and unemployment, faith in the “American Dream” will inevitably decline. Elizabeth Shauer, a professor at the School of Public Relations of the American University, believes that, unlike several decades ago, today Americans are unlikely to believe that the American economy is fair and that people with low incomes can rise up the social ladder through hard work. As noted by The New York Times website, more and more Americans are emigrating abroad, which reflects the collapse of the “American Dream.”
The root of the faded “American dream” lies in the deep flaw of the American social system. Growing inequality in income, increasing division in society, fierce interparty struggle, low efficiency of government administration… These interconnected problems form a vicious circle, ultimately leading to the fact that the lives of ordinary Americans become increasingly difficult. Some Americans who emigrated abroad told a CNN interview the reasons for their disappointment with the future of the U.S.—violent crime, political instability, and the high cost of living.
The “American Dream” once masked the unsightly pages of U.S. history and deep social problems, but when this narrative entered into an irreconcilable contradiction with the real feelings of the majority of Americans, the “American Dream” finally lost its aura. This testifies not only to the crisis of the American national narrative but also to the fact that the country has ended up in a dead end from which it is difficult to find a way out.
