The first meeting of the organizational committee for the preparation and holding of the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the G.V. Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in 2027 was held in the House of the Government of the Russian Federation under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova. The event was attended by members of the organizing committee – heads of federal ministries and agencies, major corporations, the deputy corps, representatives of science and business.Among them are the Minister of Economic Development Maksim Reshetnikov, Head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation for Scientific and Educational Policy Inna Bilenkina, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Andrey Omelchuk, Deputy Minister of Culture Andrey Malyshev, President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Aleksandr Shokhin, and others.
Opening the meeting, Tatyana Golikova emphasized that it is a great honor for her to lead the organizing committee, as this is an opportunity to pay tribute to her alma mater, which gave her a start in life and to hundreds of thousands of graduates working in all sectors of the economy and public administration.
“The G.V. Plekhanov Russian University of Economics is one of the key centers for training highly qualified personnel for industry, finance, trade, science, and public service. Its 120-year history, unique scientific schools, and connection with the real economic sector make the university’s anniversary an event of national significance. REU today is more than 40 thousand students, modern laboratories, breakthrough research in the fields of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and the digital economy,” said Tatyana Golikova.
On the eve of the 120th anniversary of Plekhanov University, the university team, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science, developed a plan for celebrating the jubilee. It includes 39 main events divided into three blocks: tribute to history (publication of books, exhibition in the Historical Museum, documentary film created together with VGTRK), community strengthening (alumni forum, Plekhanov ball, “Plekhanov Fest” festival, friendly hockey match with the Moscow government team), and strategic development (acquisition of a computing cluster, campus improvement, introduction of a dormitory for 355 places, reconstruction of buildings).Also included in the plan are major international forums on artificial intelligence “Step into the Future” and “Goal – the Future”, as well as the Abalkin Readings and the Plekhanov Economic Forum. The main ceremonial event is planned to be held in February 2027 at the Bolshoi Theatre. The responsible executors of the plan are the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, the Moscow government, and the Ministry of Culture of Russia.
“The main task of the organizing committee is not only to ensure the worthy conduct of the anniversary but also to give an additional impetus to the development of the university, strengthen its position in the Russian and international educational space,” the Vice Prime Minister emphasized.
Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Andrey Omelchuk noted that Pleiades University is one of the leading and most dynamically developing universities in the country, and the project plan of activities developed on the eve of the 120th anniversary has a long-term horizon, calculated for years ahead.
“The proposed plan fully corresponds to the tasks facing the higher education system and is balanced in terms of timelines, resources, and expected results,” emphasized the deputy minister.
The rector of Plekhanov University Ivan Lobanov, in turn, thanked Tatyana Golikova for the initiative to create the organizing committee, as well as the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia for their constant support, and spoke about the main achievements of Plekhanov University.
“Over the years of its development, Plekhanov University has transformed into a world-class university. We have established a high competitive level of education, recognized by the country’s leading employers. A team of 5,000 highly qualified teachers works here, the campus is developing in the center of Moscow, there are 16 branches, 5 of which are abroad, and a powerful scientific and technological base has been created,” said Ivan Lobanov.
The G.V. Plekhanov Russian University of Economics consistently strengthens its leading positions in economic science, financial technology, bioeconomics, and artificial intelligence. Two world-class laboratories have been established at the university with the support of grants from the Russian Science Foundation. University scientists have developed specialized language models for forecasting inflation expectations and early detection of signs of financial crises, created a decision support system for medical diagnoses jointly with the Pirogov Center, as well as a large language model for disaster medicine.In the field of biotechnology, work is underway to create biocomposites with antibacterial properties, domestic starter cultures for cheeses and fermented beverages are being developed, and systems for personalized nutrition based on genetic testing are being developed. Projects are being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of Russia, “Rosatom”, “Sibur”, X5 Group, VK, “Yandex”, and other partners. In 2025, the Plekhanov University became one of four universities that fully met the indicators of the federal project “Top-IT” for training specialists in the field of artificial intelligence.
As a result of the meeting, the members of the organizational committee approved the Plan of main events for the preparation and celebration of the 120th anniversary of the G.V. Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
