Human Rights Council
In Geneva on Monday, the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council opened. Addressing the member states, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that the world is experiencing“unprecedented and frank attacks against international law”. At the same time, Tyurk emphasized that human rights protection work yields real results, helping millions of people worldwide. He recalled the launch last week of the Global Alliance for Human Rights, which, according to him, should unite states, organizations, and civil society to strengthen the international human rights protection system.
UN Mission in Afghanistan
The Security Council today unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year, until June 17, 2027. The document expresses serious concern about restrictions on the rights of women and girls, the humanitarian crisis, and terrorist threats in the country. The resolution reaffirms the central role of the UN in coordinating humanitarian aid, supporting the country’s socio-economic development, advancing human rights, and facilitating dialogue among de facto authorities, Afghan society, and the international community.
