Beijing, June 15 /Xinhua/ — Passenger traffic and freight volume on China’s railways showed steady growth from January to May this year. At the same time, investments in the country’s main railway sector funds increased, according to data released on Monday by the State Railway Administration (SRA) of China.
According to agency statistics, the total volume of rail freight transportation for the first five months of this year reached 2.19 billion tons, which is 3.1% more than for the same period last year, while freight turnover amounted to 1.56 trillion ton-kilometers, which is 6.2% more in annual terms.
For the reporting period, the total volume of passenger railway transportation across the country amounted to 1.97 billion passenger-trips, which is an increase of 5.7% compared to the same period last year.
The total volume of investments in the main funds of China’s railway sector for the specified period amounted to 248.5 billion yuan (about 36.5 billion US dollars), which is 2.6% more compared to the previous year. At the same time, the construction of the railway network continued to progress steadily.
As stated by the official representative of the state administration, the stable growth of passenger traffic and freight turnover on the railways, combined with the planned development of railway construction, contribute to socio-economic development. -0-
