Beijing, June 14 /Xin Hua/ — China is consistently strengthening the scientific, systematic, and holistic protection of world natural heritage sites, thanks to which the conditions and protection regimes are constantly improving, the State Administration of Forestry and Grassland /SAFG/ of the PRC reported on Saturday, on the day when the country was celebrating the Day of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
According to assessments by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 90 percent of China’s heritage sites received excellent or good ratings, which is significantly higher than the global average indicator at 61 percent and the Central Asian indicator at 68 percent.
As of today, China has 15 World Natural Heritage sites and 4 Cultural and Natural Heritage sites, ranking first in the world in terms of quantity. These sites cover a total area of more than 80,000 square kilometers and are located in 20 administrative units at the provincial level. They include a variety of ecosystems: mountain ranges, forests, wetlands, deserts, and coastal zones.
In recent years, China has been intensifying efforts to protect natural heritage through a system of protected areas based on national parks. According to agency data, more than 80% of heritage sites have undergone nature-like restoration, which has effectively allowed the protection of authenticity, integrity, and ecosystems.
At the same time, China is expanding channels for improving the quality of life of the population and developing ecotourism, educational nature tours, the forest economy, and other “green” branches of industry.
At the next stage, GULSH will include World Natural Heritage sites in the monitoring zone of particularly vulnerable natural territories, thereby contributing to the coordinated protection and development of these sites and territories.
The department also creates and improves the system and mechanisms for the assessment and management of natural heritage objects to ensure effective normative management at a high standard and high level.
