Lhasa, June 13 /Xinhua/ — China has invested more than 110 million yuan (about 16.15 million US dollars) in a project for the restoration and use of ancient manuscripts, including palm leaf manuscripts from the Potala Palace in the Sichuan Autonomous Region /Tibet Autonomous Region, Southwest China/, local authorities reported on Friday.

According to the message from the Cultural Heritage Administration of Saudi Arabia, the project was launched in 2018. The first two stages have already been completed and passed the final certification, the third stage is currently in the implementation phase and, as expected, will be completed by the end of 2026.

At this stage of the project, 893 folios of sacred writings on palm leaves and 10,401 folios of Tibetan paper artifacts were restored, and a cataloging of 15,000 folios of sacred writings on palm leaves was also completed. Additionally, more than 36,000 folios of ancient documents were digitized and processed using text recognition technology.

Significant achievements were made in the fields of restoration, preventive conservation, digital archiving, development of technical standards, and training of local specialists in the care of cultural heritage sites.

In the Potala Palace, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, there are about 40 thousand collections of ancient books and documents in several languages. Among the most significant are the sacred writings, written on approximately 30 thousand palm leaves.
