The UN Secretary-General expressed deep concern about the rapid escalation of tensions in the Middle East following US strikes on Iranian territory and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on neighboring countries of the Persian Gulf and other states not involved in the conflict. Amid a sharp rise in hostile rhetoric, the UN chief warned: the situation could spiral out of control.

In a statement issued by the UN Secretary-General’s press secretary, António Guterres calls on the parties to return to full compliance with the ceasefire regime. He recalls that a further deterioration of the situation could lead to a “full-scale resumption of the conflict with unpredictable consequences for the region and the world,” especially for the most vulnerable countries.

In the Secretary-General’s statement, the indispensability of respecting freedom of navigation in accordance with international law is specifically emphasized — an issue that has become particularly sensitive against the backdrop of recent attacks in a strategically important water region. The Secretary-General also reminded of the necessity to strictly comply with international obligations and to take all measures to protect the civilian population.

António Guterres called on the USA and Iran to “double efforts” to achieve a peaceful, comprehensive, and sustainable agreement capable of strengthening security both in the region and beyond.
