The UN has launched a new initiative – the Global Alliance for Human Rights is designed to place human rights at the center of decision-making amid record levels of conflict, deepening inequalities, and accelerating climate change.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk presented an initiative in Geneva, calling it a direct response to the situation in the world which, according to him, “is going into chaos.” In an interview with the UN News Service, Türk noted that the Alliance was created to direct the energy of people striving for change.

Striving for a “better world”

“The overwhelming majority of people in the world want a better world – a more just, more honest one,” said the Military Commissioner. “Human rights are part of human nature. This is part of our DNA.”

The Alliance aims to unite a wide range of participants – governments, civil society, business, cities, religious leaders, scientists, and youth – around a common platform. The concept note of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Management states that the human rights protection system is subjected to “unprecedented pressure”: violations remain unpunished, the space for civil society is shrinking, individual states withdraw from multilateral commitments, and serious underfunding threatens the entire human rights field.

From words to actions

In the coming month, a series of specific initiatives will launch, including a Global Business and Human Rights Support Service, the RightsX summit on digital innovations, and the “Human Rights in Every Classroom” program aimed at implementing human rights education at all levels of schooling.

Speaking about the issue of compensation and accountability, Türk emphasized: “One of the most important directions of our work is to give a voice to those affected as a result of human rights violations and armed conflicts.” At the same time, the UN High Commissioner reminded of the situation of civilians in Gaza, Ukraine, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Haiti.

The alliance is conceived as a long-term endeavor, not a one-time campaign. The completion of the first three-year phase of the initiative is timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which will be observed on December 10, 2028.
