Bogotá, June 11 /Xin Hua/ — Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for another act of support for right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella and called on him not to interfere in the presidential campaign in Colombia a few days before the second round.
D. Trump earlier on the same day again spoke out on social media in support of A. de la Espriél, who has citizenship of Colombia and the USA. His opponent in the second round of the presidential elections is Ivan Sepeda from the ruling left-wing coalition “Historical Pact.” The vote is scheduled for June 21.
Mr. Petro emphasized that Colombian legislation prohibits foreign interference in elections. He warned the American leader against attempts to influence public opinion through foreign funding or disinformation campaigns.
“I inform President Donald Trump that the Constitution of Colombia prohibits foreign support and foreign money,” the head of state wrote, adding that any attempt to change the will of voters using resources from abroad is illegal.
“As the President of Colombia, I ask you not to interfere in the campaign, the outcome of which will be freely decided by the Colombian people, not you. Whoever wins, they will harm more than two centuries of friendship between Colombia and the United States,” said G. Petro.
