Meeting participants

At the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, a meeting was held for graduates of the Faculty of Civil Engineering who graduated exactly half a century ago — in 1976. More than seventy people gathered again within the walls of their alma mater after fifty years to see their former classmates, recall their years of study, and see how the university has changed. The guests were greeted by Elena Klimenko, Director of the Historical and Information Center, Victoria Vinogradova, Vice-Rector for Continuing Education, and Andrey Nikulin, Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering.

For many participants, the meeting became truly moving. Familiar auditoriums and corridors instantly returned them to their student days – to exam preparations, coursework and diploma projects, to the people with whom they spent the most important years. Half a century is quite a long period, and yet, barely stepping over the threshold, the alumni spoke about the same feeling: as if those decades had never passed.

A special sharpness was given to the meeting by the fact that for these people the university is connected with construction in the most literal sense. In their eyes, the building of the construction faculty was growing: by the fourth year, the building was so ready that classes were already held in the new walls. And someone from the students helped to erect it with their own hands in the summer – and now, fifty years later, having returned there as an established specialist, to see what that very building has become.

Changes in the university’s appearance made a strong impression on guests. Alumni recalled that the cafeteria used to be located in the basement, but today they encountered clean, bright spaces and comfortable hallways between buildings. “Beautiful, neat, comfortable” – this is how, in general opinion, the university has become. For people who have dedicated their lives to construction, these changes are especially understandable and valuable.

Speaking about today’s students, graduates wanted one thing most of all – to find their own calling and engage in it with passion. Not to be afraid of difficulties and changing direction if you feel that something else calls you. Remember that you cannot do without a solid theoretical foundation, but true mastery comes only with practice. And to cherish student brotherhood: classmates with whom you together have struggled through the challenges of study often remain close throughout your entire life.

The meeting gave its participants the opportunity to remember the past and see what SPbGASU has become today. For most of the guests, the university remains an important part of life, a place associated with years of study, a professional choice, and a genuine friendship tested by decades.

Half a century after the 1976 graduating class, this connection has not been erased. The meeting became yet another confirmation that the years spent at SPbGASU remain truly meaningful for the alumni. The university today unites people for whom it once marked the beginning of a significant professional journey.
