Moscow, June 11 /Xinhua/ — Chinese writer, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature Mo Yan arrived in Russia and attended the premiere of the play based on his novel “Frog” in Saint Petersburg. He also took part in a press conference in Moscow and held meetings with readers in both cities. This is the writer’s fourth visit to the Russian Federation.

“My novel ‘Tired of Being Born and Dying’ was staged on stage for the first time precisely in Russia, not in China. I was at the premiere in Saint Petersburg, watched the performance, and it left a very deep impression. My assessment is the highest score,” said Mo Yan at a press conference in Moscow. “They managed to stage a rather complex play. I really liked the acting of the Russian actors. It was a very successful production,” he added.

According to Mikhail Ivanov, co-founder of the bookstore “Subscription Publications,” where Mo Yan’s meeting with readers took place in Saint Petersburg, the first people arrived as early as 6 a.m., although the event started at 12 o’clock, and about 1,000 people gathered in line.

Speaking about the influence of Russian classics on Chinese literature, Mo Yan called Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mikhail Sholokhov, and Mikhail Bulgakov key authors who influenced several generations of Chinese readers and writers. “Three generations of our readers are under the great influence of Russian classics,” he emphasized.

Jury member of the “Clear Glade” award Pavel Basinsky noted that Mo Yan’s visit was extremely intense. “I am amazed by this man: he endures such a trip, so many meetings, and always responds very worthily, deeply, and seriously to all questions,” said P. Basinsky.

During the current visit, Mo Yan was awarded the “Clear Glade” prize for the novel “Death Doesn’t Wear Sandals” translated by Igor Egorov and Kirill Batygin. According to P. Basinsky, this novel completely impressed the jury members: “It is amazingly written, so we unanimously chose this novel, and there was no argument at all. It was obvious.” –0–
