ВInternational Day of Dialogue between Civilizations, which is observed on June 10, the United Nations reminds: in conditions of conflicts, growing inequality, and rapid technological changes, dialogue remains one of the most important tools for strengthening peace and mutual understanding.

In his message on the occasion of International Day, the UN Secretary-GeneralAntónio Guterresnote that today the world is experiencing a period of profound upheavals and transformations.

Path of dialogue

“Conflicts do not subside. Inequality deepens. And emerging technologies—from artificial intelligence to pure energy—present us with a crucial choice concerning the future we will build,” he emphasized.

According to the head of the UN, the distinctions between individuals and peoples too often become the subject of misinterpretation or are used to undermine global solidarity.

“But there is a way out: dialogue. Dialogue between peoples, between cultures, between confessions,” said the Secretary General.

He noted that open communication helps to find solutions even to the most complex global problems.

“When we listen, communicate, and establish contacts, we replace confrontation with cooperation, and tension — with trust,” said Guterres.

Diversity as an advantage

The UN emphasizes the special role of the Alliance of Civilizations. Created at the initiative of Spain and Turkey, the Alliance began its activities in 2005 with the support of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

António Guterres in his message noted that the Alliance of Civilizations helps build bridges between societies and transforms cultural diversity into a source of strength and mutual enrichment.

“Changes begin with impartiality and openness of heart,” he emphasized.

High representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, Deputy Secretary-General Miguel Ángel Moratinos is convinced that many modern conflicts are mistakenly explained by cultural or religious differences: “International conflicts cannot be the result of religion, culture, or civilizations alone. It must be said clearly: clashes of civilizations do not exist. There are clashes of interests and clashes of ignorance.”
