Earthquake in the Philippines
On Monday morning, a powerful earthquake occurred on the southern coast of the Philippines, resulting in at least 19 deaths, 12 people reported missing, and more than 130 injured. Residential houses, hospitals, and schools were damaged. Interruptions in communication and electricity supply were also reported, and humanitarian organizations are unable to reach some settlements due to destroyed roads and bridges. The UN is ready to support the country’s authorities in conducting rescue and restoration work, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Organization, Farhan Haq, stated during a briefing in New York.
Strikes on Ukraine
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that as a result of attacks from Friday to early Monday morning, at least 33 civilians were killed and 221 were injured, including children. The most affected were the Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. The Office is also concerned about a series of incidents that occurred last week in Kherson: as a result of strikes on humanitarian vehicles, humanitarian organization staff and volunteers were injured.
Dead UN staff members
The world does not become better by itself – it is changed by people willing to risk everything for others. This was stated at the annual memorial ceremony dedicated to fallen UN personnel by António Guterres. Last year, 136 UN staff members died: 97 civilians and 39 military personnel and police officers from UN peacekeeping forces. They represented 32 countries.
World Ocean Day
Today is World Oceans Day. In his address on the occasion of this day, the Secretary-General noted that the world’s ocean is in a catastrophic state. This is detailed in a report presented at the UN on Monday. The UN Chief emphasized that we can no longer treat the ocean as an unlimited resource and called for building more responsible relationships with it, based on science and regulated by international law.
