In the A.S. Pushkin library-reading room, as part of the project “Department of Drama of the 21st Century,” there will be a reading of Pavel Sokolov’s play “Russian Thunder” — a judicial-historical drama based on the events of the Civil War in the USA (1861–1865).

In the spotlight is the fate of John Basil Turchin (formerly a guard officer of the Russian Empire Ivan Turchaninov), who emigrated to America and took part in the conflict on the side of the North. In June 1862, a military field tribunal tried him for the riot in the city of Athens, organized by his subordinates as revenge for the atrocities of the Confederates. During the trial, the accusation (“Russian barbarian”) and the defense (brutality — a forced response) collide. A decisive role is played by his wife Nadine, who secured an audience with President Abraham Lincoln.

Actors from Moscow theaters are engaged in the performance. The event is the final reading of the season.
