Ottawa, June 8 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, Louis Arbour officially assumed the position of the 31st Governor General of Canada and Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces.
In her inaugural speech, 79-year-old L. Arbour expressed a desire to demonstrate the diversity of opinions of Canadians.
In the past, she held the post of judge of the Canadian Supreme Court, the position of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.
L. Arbour was born in Montreal and is fluent in English and French.
Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, so the head of state is the British monarch. The Governor General acts as the representative of the monarch in the country and is appointed by him on the recommendation of the Prime Minister of Canada for a term of five years. –0–
