A workshop on making a rag doll filled with “Krupenichka — grain of Kupala night” will take place at the Savvinskoye Podvorye Museum.

Ivan Kupala is a festival of the earth’s fertility; on Kupala night, people gathered herbs, jumped over bonfires, searched for the fern flower, and foretold the harvest.

Krupenichka (or grain doll) is an ancient Slavic talisman, a small pouch with grain, in the form of a rag doll; its purpose is to protect the grain that will give life to the new harvest. On Kupala Night, when the powers of nature are at their peak, filling the Krupenichka with grain means charging it for the year ahead.

In the bathing tradition, they also made a Kupalka doll on a cross-shaped base and sent it down the water with ribbons-wishes, but the grain doll was “a companion” and “homebody”: its task was to stay at home so that the grain and abundance would be preserved and multiplied.

The event is aimed at introducing Slavic amulets and traditions.
